Most Common Reasons for Accidental Rod Breakage

    • J-Hooking: Placing your hook in the hook keeper without loosening the drag or allowing slack in the line. This can pull the rod tip into a tight downward bend, called a "J-Hook Bend," which does not occur while fighting a fish. Hoisting a fish with the rod straight up can also cause this bend.
    • High sticking: Setting the hook with the rod pointing backward over the shoulder creates a severe J-Hook Bend in the upper third of the rod.
    • Overloading the rod: Stressing the rod when snagged on a log, rock, or weeds while trying to pull the lure free may cause unseen fractures, leading to breakage under load.
    • Stepping on the rod: This can cause unseen stress fractures in the graphite, which may lead to rod failure under pressure, even if the rod withstood the pressure before.
    • Hitting the rod on solid objects:Accidental contact with a boat’s gunnel or other solid objects can bruise the rod blank and cause stress fractures.
    • Rod sleeve or tube pressure: Placing a rod in a sleeve or tube with the tip caught can result in tip breakage, as rod tips are not designed to be jammed.
    • Exceeding lure or line ratings:Whip casting with a lure heavier than the rod's rating or using line that exceeds the rod's limit can cause material stresses that eventually lead to breakage.

Acme Tackle Company reserves the right to examine and inspect rods under warranty to determine the cause of failure.
